'Love-drug' boosted by massage

It's official. Massage increases the production of the hormone oxytocin, otherwise known as the  love-drug. So if you want some hormonal help for an amorous Valentines, treat your loved one to a massage - or better still, massage each other.

Oxytocin is associated with maintaining healthy, interpersonal relationships and psychological boundaries. Not only is it an ideal form of foreplay for couples, it is widely used as a bonding tool between parent and baby, as it has many physiological benefits.

Not only does massage revive tired organs, it does wonders for self-esteem and self worth.

As you massage yourself, or each other, the touch between you becomes heightened, sensual, intimate.  The more time you take to give each other regular massage, the more in tune you will feel with each other. Your bodies becoming more receptive and sensitive to touch.

Set the scene
Whether you are massaging at home, or have sent your loved one off to a professional, make sure the scene at home is inviting on their return.  Candles, music and oils are great tools for making the occasion extra romantic.

Love oils
When essential oils are added to massage, we absorb all the goodness of the plant or flower and their unique aromas arouse our senses. Cleopatra used jasmine and rose to lure Mark Anthony to her bed.

The following are great for lovers massage:
  • Rose - an aphrodisiac, it lifts the mood and regulates female sex organs. Most expensive rose essence is produced in Bulgaria  - 'rose otto'
  • Jasmine - aphrodisiac whose flowers are scattered on wedding beds in Asia.  Popular as a base note in mixed blends and perfumes. It's a favourite with aromatherapists
  • Sandalwood - woody, musky scent of sex!
  • Cedarwood - another musky scent, massage drops into the solar plexus or abdomen for pure pleasure
Hot spots
Whichever oil you choose - make sure to trickle and tease the erogonous zones - ears, stomach, inner thighs, toes, back of knees, inner elbow, wrists and neck. Enjoy!
